A Superb Mid-17th Century Oak Table Box
Made during the first years of the English Commonwealth period by a highly accomplished craftsman.
The top is formed from a single beautifully grained oak board, with a run-moulding along the front and back edges, the sides having very neat and precise chip-carved decoration. The top retains beautifully shaped ‘arrowhead’ iron strap hinges, a hasp with ‘penny’ end, and the original moulded and shaped lopers.
The front panel is again decorated in a very precise and symmetrical manner. Beneath the shaped iron lock plate are the initials ‘D M’ and the date 1652, both numbers and letters are enhanced by fine ‘pin prick’ cross hatching. To each side of the centre are two slightly larger panels filled with semi, and inverted semi, circles filled with a symmetrical leaf design. Around each panel is a pin pricked and punched border of dog tooth pattern.
The vertical ends of the panel have the same chip carving as the top, as do the rear vertical edges. The bottom board is again formed from a single board, with run-moulded front edge and chip carved ends.
A remarkable beautifully made box, of outstanding quality, colour, surface and condition.
